Historical notes about Northamptonshire
NORTHAMPTONSHIRE in 1950
Splendid churches and stately homes set in a background of undulating farmlands have made Northamptonshire traditionally the county of "spires and squires." Richer than most in its heritage of medieval architecture, this somewhat narrow strip of country lies for the most part in the broad limestone belt across the centre of England. Nowhere, perhaps has the wealth of the soil been used to more lasting advantage over so long a period, for the Northamptonshire churches can show the most varied examples of every English style from Saxon to late Tudor. Towers and slender broach spires dominate the landscapes everywhere, rising as beacons to direct the stranger to some rare village or gracious town built of the same pleasing stone. In the heart of this historic countryside are the ancestral homes of such old families as the Spencers, the Comptons, the Montagus and the Treshams who have contributed illustrious pages to our island storey.
